Why Reading works
Reading has the rare combination of a genuine town centre crowd and a serious corporate population. The same robot that stops a Saturday queue outside a shopping centre also opens a conference at Thames Valley Park on the Monday.
We have filmed in Reading more than anywhere else, so we know which pavements are level, where the power is, and which corners get busy at which hour.
Where he goes
Places in Reading that suit him
The Oracle
a covered riverside centre with the footfall and the flat floors that make a walking robot straightforward
Broad Street
the pedestrianised stretch where a crowd forms in seconds and nobody is in a hurry
Thames Valley Park
the business park end, where corporate audiences are used to technology and still stop for this
Reading FC
we have already filmed him at the ground, and a stadium concourse is an easy win for reaction footage
What he actually does
He walks, he dances, and he holds a live conversation in whatever language someone speaks to him in, answering on the spot rather than from a script. He takes a penalty if you line one up. What he cannot do is grip, so he will not carry a tray or hand anything over, and we would rather say that now than on the day.
